daedelus - love to make music to REVIEW

daedelus' new disc dropped today and although the beats are more straight forward then past albums, he is still a master of bending genres. he'll drop a beat driven wobbler featuring rappers paperboy and taz ("touchtone"), and then surprise you with a disco-esque track like "make it so." yet, there is a continuity to the album (mostly production technique and sound design) that keeps the whole thing flowing.

like most daedelus albums, though, a few tracks wander off. for example, Hrs:Mins:Secs, which was released as an EP before appearing on this disc, is driven by a hot broken beat. but it never goes anywhere. the beat never syncs up and he never comes close to any kind of melody. hardcore daedelus fans will say "that's his style," or "that's what's great about it," but i'm not buying it.

if your not familiar with daedelus or don't own any past albums, it'll take you a few times through to warm up this one. "assembly lines" didn't really get my head bobbin til the 2nd or 3rd listen but now i'm pumpin it in my car. if you're familiar at all with what daedelus is about you should pick this one up.

STANDOUT MOMENT:

when i first popped in Feed the Animals, i was listenin for reasons to hate it. but when jay-z dropped over paranoid android, i knew i'd be secretly jammin to this one.

and have you been to a girl talk show yet? there were so many 16 year old emo kids sweating that all i could smell was hair dye and eye liner....

wow. edIT's last album was put him on the map. but the two new tracks he just released put him head and shoulders above the rest.

ive always like edIT but, now, i seriously consider him one of the top 5 electronic producers out there right now...

by far and away Afro Warrior is the best dubstep album to date.

STS9 - Peaceblaster REVIEW

The new Sound Tribe Sector 9 album, Peaceblaster dropped yesterday to quite a bit of internet buzz. But as a follow up to 2005's Artifact, Peaceblaster is daunted by the impossible task of 1-upping their earlier studio album. Unfortunately, Peaceblaster never really breaks free from the shadow that an album like Artifact casts.

Peaceblaster starts relatively strong with Peaceblaster '68 and '08 into Metameme and Sock Doctrine (probably the standout track on the disc) but trails off into a sound that really just confused me. If someone had turned on this album randomly, I'm honestly not sure I'd recognize it as Sector 9. And where is Lerner (the percussionist) on this whole disc? On tracks like Tokyo and Peoples (Artifact), the chemistry between he and Zach was FIRE. I struggled to find him on most of the new tracks.

As is common with S9 this album is probably just the first edition of these tracks. On the road, I wouldn't be surprised if the songs on this album blossom into something completely different. For example, the piano part at the end of Ramone and Emiglio wasn't added til much later after it first appeared on a disc. But let's hope that HB goes back to his signature style of single note solos instead of strumming distorted chords.

For the avid S9 fan, this will be a pretty much automatic purchase. But if you're new to S9 I would recommend download some various '04/'05 live shows or simply take the safe route and pick up Artifact.

RZA - Digi Snacks REVIEW

The RZA's new album, "Digi Snacks," dropped last month to almost no buzz or fanfare. Outside of diehard Wu fans and rap bloggers most seemed to have missed it completely. But while The Wu's, RZA produced, 8 Diagrams was able to make waves post-release, I'm skeptical as to how much momentum Digi Snacks will pick up before fading.

Truncated beats and lurking harmonies definitely prove this album to be masterfully produced, but the RZA's lyricism really doesn't do the beats justice. Either way, you have to credit RZA for still pushing further into an unexplored niche in rap music. With his notoriety, he could easily be producing for more mainstream acts. Instead, he includes less known artists Black Knights, Monk, and Thea van Seijen (think massive attack). Most diehard RZA fans will pick this up to complete the Bobby Digital trilogy, but more laid back WuTang fans will be better off picking and choosing a few tracks.
